Building a Legacy

The momentum is building...  The planning is well underway...

The Titanic Centenary is almost upon us.  The 31 May 2011 marks the centenary of the ship's launch, following its construction in Harland & Wolff's in Belfast.  This represents a triumph of the skills, talents and technological innovation of the men who built her. For us, of course, the link is directly to Thomas Andrews Jr, himself, Titanic's chief designer and the man whose name founded our school.  We plan to mark the centenary with a year of commemorative events focused on the Andrews Memorial Hall; our aim to reconnect the hall to the community for whom it was built - both the current generations and those who, in its heyday, attended the dances, the wedding receptions, the GB & BB displays, and, perhaps, even remember the Home Guard drills and the billiards room.  The 15 April 2012 will have a rather different feel, as it marks the centenary of the ship's loss and the tragic loss of life that accrued.  The school will also mark this occasion in an appropriately sensitive fashion.  Further details will be available soon, so do keep an eye on the website or in the local press.

We feel that Building a Legacy is a statement both of intent and of respect for the legacy of Thomas Andrews.  While looking back and appreciating the role of the past in shaping the present, a school must also focus on providing an education in which all pupils' potential and talents are nurtured and developed, as well as building the foundation for all future learning.

We hope you agree to join us on our journey...

We have produced a new promotional flier for the school - a publication we hope you will also find in shops and public buildings in and around Comber.  We hope you like it!

Following our recent communication to parents regarding the school's Safeguarding Policies (accessed from the About Us page of the website), we are pleased to publish our revised Drugs Policy.  A hard copy can be requested from school, or you can view the policy by clicking here.

You can also view the latest Board of Governors' Annual Report from the About Us page - or request a hard copy from the school.

November is always a popular month for our children's charity work, with the BBC Children in Need appeal.  This year we showed our support by wearing pyjamas to school - or spots for some!  Thanks to everyone who helped us raise £432.

Comber's Fair in the Square has become an annual highlight in the build up to Christmas for the whole community. Of course, for us it marks the beginning of our Christmas preparations in earnest!  This year the P7 children from the choir sang to the tea-time crowds, before some of our P6 children took part in the now traditional lantern parade - which marks Santa's arrival and the all-important switching on of the Christmas lights.

Our own Christmas Fair took place in the Andrews Hall on 26 November and was once again really well supported by the children, their families and friends, and the staff.  It's always a huge team effort to put on the fair and our sincere thanks to the PTA Committee for their commitment and hard work.  So far they are having a great year.  All the members deserve a break over Christmas and a re-charging of the batteries for 2011!

Looking ahead to December sees, not only Christmas coming, but our open mornings - on Wednesday and Thursday, 1 and 2 December.  Please encourage anyone you know who's thinking of sending their child to Andrews to come and visit.  If they can't make the open mornings, perhaps the open evening may suit - on Thursday 13 January 2011 (6.30pm - 8.30pm).  Details of the schools' admissions criteria are available on the Home page of the website.

Below, are a few pictorial reminders of life in P1...  But, please, try your best to come and see us in action!
