March 2010

With Easter so early this year, welcome to the news for March and the end of term.

We began the month with a whole school charity event in aid of Lepra, in support of education, health care and cures for leprosy.  We had superb assembly presentations, followed by every child - and Jofli - taking part in an aerobics session in the Andrews Hall.  £21 cures someone from leprosy - a simple, direct message with a built-in target.  We look forward to hearing how much we're raised, so watch this space!

We had really exciting news on the sports front this month, with our football team winning the Newtownards & District Primary Schools' League - for the first time since 1992!  This competition has been keenly contested over a number of weeks and the boys and their coach, Mr Ferguson, deserve massive congratulations.  This league is genuinely strong and to win it requires talent, commitment and consistency.  Following on from last season's success in winning the cup, we can genuinely claim to have found a run in form.

The finale to the term was our school production of Bugsy, Alan Parker's famous 'ganster movie' set in 1920s New York and starring a cast of children.

Our cast was made up of children in P7 and P6 - and what stars they were!  The show was simply superb and everyone in the school is so proud of the children's achievements.  Our show had it all - great dialogue and acting, drama and suspense, lots of laughs and, perhaps most importantly of all, plenty of slapstick.  The splurge guns proved very popular with everyone, especially those lucky enough to be pulling the trigger!

The team effort required in school to stage a show of this size is immense, but our sincere thanks also goes to the families, for supporting rehearsals, acquiring costumes and attending performances.  To Mrs Knaggs, for her musical direction and Mrs Barry, for her stage direction and production, we are eternally grateful.  We will be posting pictures from Bugsy on the Gallery page of the website, soon, but to get us started, here's a 'taster'...

Our term ends with the P1-3 Easter Service, on Tuesday 30 March 2010, at 9.15am in the Andrews Hall.  From all of us at Andrews, have a lovely Easter break and, as this picture reminds us, may spring bring new life, sunshine and smiles...
